Primary Education under the Mamlūks: Two Documents from the Ḥaram in Jerusalem
D. S. Richards (The University of Oxford)
Abstract
The starting point for this paper dealing with primary education under the Mamlūks was provided by two documents preserved in Jerusalem in the collection of mostly late 14th-century material, commonly known as the Ḥaram documents. The two pieces bear the numbers 3 and 49. The latter has not been published previously. Both pieces concern a Qur’ān school, a maktab, established and funded by a Mamlūk emir in the last third of the 14th century. In addition to their study, the paper contains an edition of the two texts.
