L’expression de l’inchoativité en arabe

Nadia Anghelescu (Bucharest)

Abstract

The term “inchoative” is used today in two apparently different senses. However, both are related to the category of aspect: (1) Concerning the phase of the unfolding of the event, in this case as a function of so-called “inchoative” verbs (like “to start to”). (2) Concerning the notion of a change from one state to another: This notion can, in principle, be expressed by lexical, lexico-grammatical, and grammatical means.

The author proposes to show that these two senses cannot be separated, the second implying the first, which means there are also interferences in how these two notions are expressed in not only in Arabic.
