Collocation in Arabic (MSA) and the Treatment of Collocations in Arabic Dictionaries

Jan Hoogland (Nijmegen)

Abstract

Collocations means that two (or more) words appear in each other’s company because the usage of a particular word (e.g. a noun) limits the choice of an adjective to a small number of adjectives that combine with this particular noun. An impressive amount of theoretical research has been carried out concerning collocations. The article, however, deals with practical needs and examines Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) collocations and their appearance in bilingual Arabic dictionaries.
