Abstract

Contact between Muslims and Christian Nubians began as early as the first century AH, when Muslim troops were dispatched to the region. A treaty regulating relations regarding security and trade was drafted between the two parties in 31/652. It was during this time that the so-called baqṭ (tribute) was introduced. The article provides an analysis of this relationship in the 13th century.
