References to Animals in the Dīwān of al-Ḫansā’

Abstract

This paper presents and analyses all the sentences containing references to animals that occur in the collected oeuvre of the early 7th-century poetess al-Ḫansā’. Animals play a prominent role in the poems of al-Ḫansā’. Approximately eighteen percent of all her lines contain the names of twenty animal species or various adjectives describing them. Some, that are the focus of special attention, are described in minute detail.
