The Standardization of Qur’ān Readings: The Testimonial Value of Dreams
Leah Kinberg (Tel-Aviv)
Abstract
Authorization in Islam is often achieved on the basis of prophetic ḥadīṯ formulated to legitimate the topic under discussion. The topic of dreams in Islam is no exception to this rule in the sense that the authority given to their usage as a reliable source is also based on prophetic sayings.
The article examines dream narrations which treat Qur’ānic readings and Qur’ān readers. While keeping in mind that dreams in Islamic literature may reproduce differences and developments within the Islamic community, the paper aims to show the possible contribution of these narratives to the understanding of the standardization of Qur’ānic readings.
