Abstract
While renowned Hungarian intellectuals participated in the ‘modernisation’ of Turkey during the early republican period, lesser known among them is the Hungarian-born architect, Ferenc Hillinger (1895–1973). Hillinger arrived in Turkey shortly before the death of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1938, and worked as a designer-architect and as a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. The paper outlines the life and career of a forgotten Hungarian architect, who took an active role in the education of a new generation of Turkish architects, and thus contributed to the architectural history of the country.
